Inspired by the energy and movements of the tiger and the graceful crane, it is characterized by low stances with snappy strikes and smooth flowing movements. It provides a path towards developing internal strength, mental discipline, strong muscle, positive attitude, self confidence, and healthy joints. Students work on basic exercises until a foundation is laid to delve into the various hand and weapons forms.
I put together a list of why I believe Hung Gar is such a healthy form of exercise and movement based on my 35 years of personal experience. Over a decade in the field of bodywork has helped me to have a better understanding of common afflictions and weaknesses of the modern western body.
Low stances form the foundation of practice, strengthening underutilized muscles of the west; adductors, psoas, glutes, and intrinsic muscles of the lower legs.
